Agricultural Policies and Food Security in Lagos State, Nigeria: A Historical Approach

Abstract

The trust of this paper historicized the various government agricultural policies and its efforts in ensuring food security in Lagos State between the periods of 1967 up to 2019. It should be reiterated here that in this work, the focus is only on policies affecting the production of the cash and food crops alone simply because of their primacy in revenue generation both for the government and the metropolis, and also because of their political and economic significance. A historical research method was adopted in this study. In this regard, writings and research works on major issues relating to agricultural policies and its impact on food production in Lagos State were collected and historically analyzed. The study constitutes a fieldwork survey to the ministry of Agriculture both state and federal and collection of both oral and written sources. This implies the use of relevant materials from all possible sources. It includes visiting areas of study to collect information, examining the oral sources to find answers to questions raised, and also visiting libraries and archives to look for relevant information on the topic. concluded that agricultural policies are germane to the attainment of food security in the state and the country at large.
